Ravi Verma is considered the pioneer in the development of the western style in Indian paintings. He was the first Indian artist to exhibit overseas in 1892. The importance of his work lies in its corelation of Indian mythological art and Western concept of art. He was patronised by Indian royalty and was popular with large sections of society. He died in 1906, but left behind a legacy of paintings which form an important landmark in the history of Indian painting.
